a Garden Update

Hi friends! Just wanted to check in and provide an update on our little backyard garden.

At this point (June 2020), we have three child size Square Foot Garden boxes (3’ x 3’ each – 27 squares total). We also have some stand-alone containers. Most of the veggies were started at the beginning of May from our Burpee Seed Starting kit and transferred to the boxes once they were built and had soil. As of this past weekend, we tied down yarn grid lines to separate our square feet boxes and I LOVE the way it looks!

Below are three pics that give an quick overview of what we have going on😊 As you can see, the boxes are pretty much the same except for a few small differences.

Reading the boxes from left to right. Then top, middle, and lower rows. We have…

the container portion...

  • 2 pots filled with cilantro… no progress yet
  • 1 pot with jalapeno pepper (will probably need to transfer this later)
  • 1 pot filled with bunching onions… still no sign of seeds ☹
  • 2 pots of single dill plants
  • 1 attempt to propagate a pineapple… another little experiment to see if we can grow a pineapple out of a used pineapple stem
  • 1 pot filled with radishes… cropped out of the above picture
  • 1 pot filled with beets… no progress yet & cut out of the above picture
  • Then the big tin container has a lot of mint with one little jalapeno… (I had too many peppers and needed to find him a home!). I originally transferred about 9 seedlings but I’m only seeing about 4-5 pop up…

The plants that were started from the seed starting kit are looking good! Tomatoes and basil look strong. And if I’m being honest… these are probably my favorite foods to eat, so this is good!

Smelling fresh basil

However, I am worried about the dill a bit… it looks like it’s browning… almost as if it’s getting TOO much sun and getting burnt out. If anyone has any tips on how to bring my dill back to life, please let me know. It’s such a shame because I planted them at the same time as my mother-in-law and her little dill garden looks like it’s thriving. I’ll have to ask her how much sun she’s letting her dill get because I have to be doing something wrong.

I’m also a little concerned about the green onion (bunching onion). When I was doing my research, a bunch of YouTube videos were saying that bunching onion was pretty much the easiest plant to grow (besides weeds!) and that it’s pretty much impossible to mess up. However, it’s been 10 days and I still haven’t seen those babies sprout.

And that’s a wrap! I hope you enjoyed hearing about what we have going on and my experience about being a beginner gardener. As always, any tips are welcomed. I hope to provide another update in a few weeks!
